Rug Tufting Image Guidelines

To ensure your rug turns out beautifully, it’s important to choose a design that works well with tufting.

Not all images will translate well into a tufted rug, so here are some simple guidelines to help you pick the perfect design:

Size Specifications

Ensure the design occupies the full space for a clear and well-defined tufted rug

  • Submit your image in a high-resolution format. We recommend PNG or JPEG files for the best quality.
  • Images must be at max. 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall.
  • Your image should fit within a 40cm x 40cm canvas.
  • We accept JPEG, PNG, and GIF formats.

Keep It Simple

Less is more when it comes to tufting! Choose a design with clear, bold shapes that are easy to recognise. Simple images with strong outlines and solid colors work best.

If your design is too detailed, it may not be possible to tuft it accurately. A clean and simple design ensures your rug looks just as amazing as you imagined.

No Intricate or Detailed Designs

Highly detailed images with tiny elements, fine patterns, or shading can get lost in the tufting process. If a design has too many small details, they may blend together, making the final rug look messy or unclear.

To get the best results, choose a design that has large, well-defined areas and avoids tiny, intricate features.

Avoid Photographs or Watercolour Images

Rug tufting works best with solid colours and defined shapes. Photographs, watercolour paintings, or images with soft shading do not translate well into a tufted rug.

Since tufting uses individual strands of yarn, blending colors like in a painting isn’t possible. Stick to bold, flat colours with no gradients or shading effects.

No Thin Lines or Tiny Text

Thin lines and delicate details can disappear when tufting. If your design relies on very thin outlines or intricate patterns, they may not show up properly in the final rug.

Similarly, small text is difficult to tuft clearly. If you’d like to include words in your design, make sure they are large, bold, and use a simple font for the best results.

Please note that we will reject any images with more than 5 characters

Avoid Protruding or Thin Extensions

Designs with small, thin parts sticking out—like whiskers, spikes, or thin tails—are difficult to finish cleanly and may not hold their shape.

For the best results, choose a design that is compact and has thicker, more solid shapes.

A smart solution is to place your design within a circle, rectangle or square. Are you in doubt? Send your design to us, we will be happy to think along with you.

Use Front-Facing Images Only

Side angles, perspective views, or complex 3D images can be difficult to tuft accurately. To ensure the best outcome, use an image that is front-facing and has clear, flat shapes.

This helps maintain the proportions of your design and ensures it translates well into a tufted rug.

Submit Your Design on Time

To make everything is prepared for your workshop, we need your final design at least 3 working days before your session. This allows us to check the image, make any necessary adjustments, and get your tufting frame ready.

If you’re unsure about your design, don’t worry! We have a selection of pre-approved designs that are guaranteed to work well for tufting. You can choose from these options to make the process easier and stress-free.
